Sunflower Hill Luxury Inn is truly a family affair. Founded in 1989 by Richard and Marjorie Stucki , the Inn flourished under their industry and creativity and that of other family members. Two of the family’s eight children, Robyn and Jeff, became partners in the enterprise in 1993.
Robyn was an artist and illustrator of children‘s and gift books. Jeff and his wife established their own lodging and restaurant consulting firm. Gregg, another family member, joined the Inn’s team in 1997 as General Manager. Other family members have made significant contributions over the years in construction, marketing, and operations support.
The Stucki influence is evident throughout the Inn. Richard and Marjorie’s love of antique furniture is visible in many of the beautiful antique pieces used at the Inn, including the magnificent bedroom set gracing the French Bedroom. Another favorite family heirloom is the splendid sideboard located in the Inn’s Great Room, fondly known as “Mother’s cupboard” after Marjorie. Richard painstakingly restored and repaired many of the antique furniture pieces and was instrumental in the refurbishment of the original ranch house building.
Marjorie’s influence is apparent in the sumptuous breakfast menus which include favorite family recipes from the Sunflower Hill Pantry (the family’s former bakery and deli in Moab). It was during the pre-inn bakery years that Richard and Marjorie developed the Inn's signature muffins as well as other guest favorites such as the Honey-Almond Granola. For years Richard was known around Moab as the "Muffin Man" for the delicious muffins he would bake fresh each morning and then deliver throughout town.
Marjorie and daughter, Robyn, with their shared love of all things country, joined in decorating the Ranch House rooms. Stenciled walls which originally graced many of the rooms of the Ranch House and the fanciful flower mural in the Summer House Suite were provided by the inn’s resident artist, Robyn. For many years she oversaw the design and care of the extensive flower gardens at the Inn. Today, Robyn continues to lend her artistic talent with the website design, ad layouts, t-shirt designs, as well as the logo for the inn.
Jeff lent his hospitality expertise in the exceptional level of service provided by the Inn staff, as well as designing the architecture for the Garden Cottage expansion in 1995 and the addition of the pool in 2004. Brent (another son) was the general contractor on the Garden Cottage expansion. Gregg imparts his enthusiasm and graciousness as the Inn’s general manager, ensuring that the family tradition of genuine hospitality, exceptional service, and first class comfort is carried on.
Over the past ten years, a third generation of Stuckis have become involved at the inn as many of Gregg and Terri's children have assisted with the family business. Returning guests have become accustomed to seeing various young “helpers” lending a hand in the Dining Room during breakfast. Robyn’s son, Levi, is caretaker of the grounds, gardener for the extensive vegetable/fruit gardens and orchard, and works on a myriad of outdoor projects. He’s also the resident photographer.
Even the Sunflower Hill name is a family trademark: it was the name of the family antique and gift shop in Salt Lake City, the former bakery-turned-deli in Moab, and it was also the name of the family homestead in Castle Valley (located 20 miles outside of Moab). When Richard and Marjorie decided to launch the Inn, they knew just what they should call it!
In February of 2008 Richard passed away. Marjorie now lives in Payson, Utah, next door to two of her daughters, Robyn and Kim.
